Dentures are a lifechanging tooth replacement option for those who have suffered from significant tooth loss. They help patients show off their smile with confidence, speak clearly, and chew their food. However, getting used to eating with your dentures can be challenging at first. Fortunately, with a little bit of practice, you will get the hang of it. Here are some tips to help.

Start Out Slow

Try beginning with softer foods when you first get your dentures. Cut your food into small pieces to make them easier to chew. It is important to use both sides of your mouth when you chew so there is an even distribution of pressure and your dentures don’t become dislodged. Taking it slow is key to adjusting.

Bite Carefully

If you need to bite down on food, try to do this using your canine teeth instead of your front teeth. This can keep your dentures from shifting around and prevent your gums from becoming sore.

Frequent Practice

It might not feel comfortable right away, but after multiple days or a couple of weeks, it will feel more natural. As time goes on and you are getting more comfortable with your dentures, you can try introducing firmer foods. During this adjustment period, be sure to stay away from foods that are particularly hot and meals that contain shells or sharp bones. You should also refrain from chewing gum at this time.

Avoid Sticky Foods

Eating with dentures will become more and more natural over time, so you will be able to enjoy many of your favorite foods again. However, there are certain items that are best avoided when you have dentures. Nuts and seeds can get beneath your dentures and irritate your soft tissues. Hard and sticky food can cause damage to your dentures. Ultimately, it’s important to be mindful of the foods you enjoy so you don’t end up with oral health issues or a broken denture.

Stay Hydrated

Whole grain bread and cereals are good for your health, but they can stick to your dentures, leading to bacterial growth in your mouth. Remember to stay hydrated and have a glass of water with your meal. This will help to soften the food and make it easier for you to chew and swallow with ease. Drinking plenty of water also helps to promote salivary production, preventing dry mouth.

Don’t be discouraged if you are having difficulty with your dentures at the beginning. Practice makes perfect. You will be enjoying your favorite foods again in just a matter of time!
